During a reading, I recommend staying present with your breath and your body as much as possible.
That’s where the healing is going to happen.
When we're in our mind center instead of our body, we're disconnected from the energetic dimension of our being. Rather than allowing the energy to speak and move, the mind begins organizing, interpreting, and defending. It becomes harder to receive what's actually happening. Your experience of a reading can subtly shift from one in which you are being supported to deeply connect with the flow of your energy, to one in which your mind is trying to understand. Healing becomes something the mind believes will happen after it has understood enough. This is not how it works. Your mind will never have enough information to get out of the way.
When you're with your breath and body, you can feel what’s happening. This allows your presence to help the energy move. Sometimes being in feeling is a little scary. The vividness of our body and energy can feel like a lot if we've been living primarily in our mind. Our physical and energetic bodies may also be holding difficult or painful experiences, so we may impulsively move away from contact with those inner experiences.
We tend to operate using the mind-center as the first layer of contact. During a reading we're listening to what’s being spoken and trying to make sense of it. Words are very important during readings. I'm often surprised by the words that come through, and I've learned they're never accidental. Words are one level on which energy is summoned, moved, and directed during a reading.
It's important to know that the speaking part of a reading is only one level. While it's a necessary part of the communication, it's only one of many layers of exchange, and not always the most important. The primary healing of the reading is happening in the energetic dimensions of both reader and client. Countless points of energy are lighting up, negotiating, moving, or stalling.
If you hold tightly to staying in your mind center, you withdraw energy from the shared universe of the reading. This slows or even stops the flow of information — which is often your mind’s goal.
Instead of energetically stepping forward into a stance where you can receive healing from yourself through the reading relationship, the mind starts acting as though it's the arbiter of healing, growth, and movement of energy. The reality is that these things are the job of the body and its subtle energy fields.
When the mind wants to stop the reading, it is either trying to divert your awareness from feelings of fear or vulnerability, or it is operating on autopilot, jamming the signal out of habit.
As all real healing and growth processes do, readings invite us to experiment with trusting the parts of ourselves that are beyond the mind.
Getting the most out of your reading comes down to something very simple: relax. Breathe. Keep coming back to your body so your higher guidance can reach you.
I'm sharing these perspectives in the hope that they're helpful. They shouldn't be taken as rules. They're not about doing a good job. The best way to show up for a reading is as yourself.
